The Rings of Saturn

The Duku Highway, green mountains, red ground, water and steam, a coast at dusk, a city seen from far enough away to be only a shape.

Distance decides what a thing looks like. Close up, a mountain is rock, weather, and a reason to turn back. From far enough away it is only a shape — but the shape is the part anyone remembers.

The places worth photographing are rarely the places you can reach. That is not a complaint about access. It is what makes the picture.

Scale is hard to put in a frame, because a frame has no size. A lake and a puddle take up the same rectangle. What tells them apart is everything the picture refuses to include — the road, the person, the second mountain.

So the useful decision is usually subtraction: not what to point at, but what to leave outside the edge.
