About关于

I photograph on foot, mostly. People going about their work, and the structures they move through — tracks, courtyards, market rows, ridgelines.

I am drawn to distance: the frame where someone is absorbed in what they are doing and has not noticed you. Most of these pictures were made by waiting rather than by asking.

I kept everything: a hard drive from the last five years. I did not file it by trip — I filed it by what is in the frame. So a coal town in Hami sits next to a dead city in Turpan; a bird market in Kashgar next to a ring in Thailand; a wall in Wuxi next to a wall in Angkor. Nothing was shot for a portfolio — most of it was just the walk home.
